This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay – A Review

This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay (medical doctor turned comedy writer) gives a glimpse into the reflective journal of a junior doctor in the NHS. Having come through the NHS training system, Kay felt the need to share the shocking and, often, overlooked reality of becoming a doctor. With great humour, Kay gives the reader a light-hearted insight into his years of training, all the while opening our eyes to what really is going on within hospital wards.

Non-fiction is often written as a story, introducing us to the character in childhood and following a chronological sequence of events from there. Medical professionals can share their experience like nobody else can. No matter how much one researches, if you have not trained within the NHS or HSE you simply won’t understand. I believe the success of this book depends largely on the honesty that Kay shares. The challenge of this book was making it accessible to those who have no medical background. With great skill, i.e. humour and a comprehensive legend, the challenge is overcome in this true-to-life read.

This is Going to Hurt was given to me as a Christmas present from my manager to “help me learn about the NHS” – my job requires a basic knowledge of both the NHS and HSE. I would highly recommend this book to any healthcare professional out there. I can guarantee you’ll have a giggle as you relate to many of Kay’s interactions. On a more serious note, I would recommend this book to young students who are considering medicine as a career. While we are aware that medics have aptitude and dedication, it is important to remember that becoming a doctor is much more than being able to regurgitate a text book. On the contrary, I would not recommend this book to any lady approaching her due date – take my word for it, Adam’s written descriptions leave little to the imagination.

This book was the first book I read in 2019 – the year in which I have committed to reading 25 books. You can keep up with my list and reviews here.
